Here’s How To Increase Your Car’s Fuel Efficiency

June 26, 2019/by Ed

With gas prices continually on the rise, fuel efficient cars have lately become all the rage. Many car owners are now switching to vehicles marketed as “fuel efficient” even though some of them guzzle gas like there’s no tomorrow.

You don’t need to invest in a specialized car to travel farther on a gallon of gas. There are free and simple ways to make your vehicle more fuel efficient.

Quick and Easy Ways to Improve Fuel Efficiency

If you’re keen on saving money, or if you simply want to improve your car’s fuel efficiency, we’re giving you three great ways to do it without spending a fortune. These tips can work on any vehicle, whether you’re driving a vintage or a brand new SUV.

Tip #1 – Use premium grade fuel

There’s a very strong chance that you’re already driving a new crossover vehicle. If you are, opting for premium high octane fuel is the best choice you can make. Sure, you end up paying more initially. But premium fuel does two things that ordinary fuel can’t:

  • Improves combustion. Premium grade fuel is specially formulated to maximize your engine’s combustion. This provides a greater burst of speed and better performance overall.
  • Conditions the engine while it runs. Regular fuel will have some level of impurity. It contains debris and sediments which can harm your engine in the long haul. This isn’t the case with premium fuel. In fact, it is capable of improving your engine the more it is used. Premium grade fuel can boosts its performance and prolong its life, as well as prevents wear that eventually causes it to consume fuel less efficiently.

When switching to premium grade fuel, be sure to use the proper octane for your engine. Check your car’s manual or with the manufacturer to find out which types are recommended for your vehicle’s model and make.

Tip #2 – Check your tires

Check your tire pressure every month. Tires that remain unchecked can be several pounds underinflated. Underinflation can increase your tire resistance by up to 5 percent. What this does is make your engine work a little more harder just so it could push your vehicle forward.

You should also consider switching your treads. If you’re driving an SUV designed for off-road travel but find yourself driving around the city, you take up more fuel. Using the right treads for certain driving conditions should make your car more fuel-efficient.

Tip #3 – Have a regular engine checkup

Make sure that you get your engine checked regularly. Back in the day, we called it a tune up. However, most modern vehicles are now equipped with computer-controlled fuel injectors so a checkup would be more accurate.

A poorly maintained engines consumes more fuel due to the accumulation of gunk. When you get your engine checked, be sure to have it cleaned and have its parts replaced wherever necessary. Oxygen sensors, spark plugs, fuel and air filters, or anything that shows signs of wear have to be replaced.
