What to Do to Prevent Roadside Collisions?

July 20, 2020/by carmel

You were on your way home, but then, your dashboard abruptly lights up and your car slows down. Despite your effort to push the accelerator, it just doesn’t even move a bit. Luckily, you were able to bring your car to the shoulder while vehicles riskily passed by.

Being stranded with your vehicle that wouldn’t start can be annoying especially if it is late at night. You also run the risk of getting struck by another vehicle.

Possible reasons on why your car died.

Cars need the correct mixture of fuel, spark, and air. The newer cars can warn drivers what is wrong because of an on-board computer modules and sensors. The older vehicles and cars with a terrible computer chip cannot give you warning in advance. So, learn what you need to do.

Here are the reasons why a car’s motor suddenly stopped:

  • Terrible electrical wiring– rusty or loose electrical connectors interrupt the engine performance. Another reason for a loose connection is fender bender no matter how minor it is. Heck, even a pothole can cause that too!
  • Dead battery– if your battery cannot hold a charge correctly or does not charge at all, your car engine will die down due to stress on the engine and the alternator. Cold weather causes this problem too.
  • Watered-down gas– if you put in gas with lots of moisture, the fuel cannot burn correctly. This will make your car to stop.
  • Fuel pressure issues– lack of pressure in your engine’s fuel system can stop when going up or going down a hill. A defective fuel pump can also cause the engine to stall.

Here are some tips to keep you and your passengers safe.

  • Stay inside your car- Do not go down your car. Other drivers might not see you unless you are wearing one of those reflective clothes. Likewise, avoid flagging down vehicles that are passing by or to take a look at the hood. Instead, open the emergency flashers, call for help, and stay inside your car. A police officer might investigate why your lights are blinking.
  • Put on your seatbelt- Rear collisions are the usual reason that vehicles stall. So, if your car gets hit by another vehicle and you are not wearing your seatbelt, you could be seriously injured. To be safe always, make sure that you and your passengers are wearing their seatbelts until someone comes to help you. When you are driving with a little kid, try to hold them back in the car seat.
  • Set up ground reflectors- It is wise to have ground reflectors with you in case of roadside emergency. These are either in orange or yellow triangles that coming vehicles can see right away no matter what weather and light conditions there is. When needed, set them up and go back to your car.
