Don’t Panic! Here’s What to Do When Your Car Overheats

November 26, 2022/by carmel

Your car overheating is a scary sight. You might feel like you’re about to lose control of the car, or even worse, that it might burst into flames! But don’t panic – there are some simple things you can do to bring your car back to life. In this blog post, we will discuss what to do when your car overheats, and how to prevent it from happening again.

Why does your car overheat?

There are a few reasons why your car might overheat. The most common reason is that the coolant level is low. Coolant, also known as antifreeze, helps to keep your engine cool by absorbing heat. If the coolant level is low, there is less liquid to absorb the heat, and the engine will start to overheat.

Another reason why your car might overheat is a clogged radiator. The radiator is responsible for dissipating heat away from the engine. If it becomes clogged, the engine will start to overheat because the heat has nowhere to go.

Lastly, a faulty water pump can also cause your car to overheat. The water pump is responsible for circulating the coolant throughout the engine. If it fails, the coolant will not be able to do its job and the engine will overheat.

What to do when your car overheats

If you notice that your car’s temperature gauge is in the red, or if you see steam coming from under the hood, pull over immediately and turn off the engine. Do not open the hood until the engine has cooled down completely – otherwise, you risk being burned by the steam.

Once the engine has cooled, open the hood and check the coolant level. If it is low, add coolant to the reservoir until it reaches the “full” line. Do not overfill it – too much coolant can also be harmful to your car.

Next, check the radiator to see if it is clogged. If it is, use a garden hose to flush out the debris. Be careful not to get too close to the radiator – the steam can be very hot!

Lastly, check the water pump to see if it is working properly. If it isn’t, you will need to have it replaced.

Preventing your car from overheating

The best way to prevent your car from overheating is to regularly check the coolant level and make sure it is topped off. You should also have your radiator flushed and the water pump checked periodically to make sure they are working properly.

If you live in an area that gets very hot, it is also a good idea to invest in an engine coolant system. This system will help to keep your engine cool even on the hottest days.

Conclusion

Your car overheating can be a scary experience, but it doesn’t have to be. By following the steps above, you can easily fix the problem and prevent it from happening again. Just remember to stay calm and don’t panic!
